The Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean region was originally inhabited by the Pekuakamiulnuatsh (Pekuakami people), now known as Mashteuiatsh. The tradition of welcoming and rallying is perpetuated every summer at the First Nations Great Summer Gathering, during which a colorful pow-wow is held. Learn about the culture at the Carrefour d'accueil Ilnu or live the aboriginal experience by staying on Ilnu territory. Mashteuiatsh has a front-row seat to the glowing sunset over Pekuakami (Lac Saint-Jean). Tradition, history, art and crafts are all present in the stores and galleries, as well as in the Ilnu museum, which also reflects the contemporary reality of the Pekuakamiulnuatsh. At Nikuishkushtakan, say kuei (hello) on arrival and niaut (goodbye) on departure!
