The Heritage Harmony Circuit? What’s that? Is it free? Is it guided? Can I do it year-round? Do I need to book in advance? Is it accessible? How long does it take to visit? Will I learn anything interesting? Is it fun for all ages? …
Heritage Harmony Circuit: History, Landscapes, and Amazing Stories to Experience

It’s no surprise that all these questions come up—the Heritage Harmony Circuit is still a new route to explore, and trust me, it deserves a spot on your list of must-dos during your next visit to Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean.
But who am I to recommend it? Another good question! Allow me to introduce myself: I’m Nancy Donnelly, a proud Saguenay resident who’s been working in the regional tourism industry for almost 20 years. So yes, sometimes I feel like a living encyclopedia (remember those?) of all the treasures to visit in Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean!
I’m not exactly your model guide with a little flag in hand, but I could do the Heritage Harmony Circuit with my eyes closed (and one hand in a bag of cheese curds). So, instead of consulting ChatGPT (which sometimes hallucinates!), I’m very happy to answer your questions!

What is the Heritage Harmony Circuit in Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean?
Basically, it’s a route that combines rich heritage with stunning landscapes to feed your curiosity…and your desire to enjoy some fresh air. Along the way, you’ll find stops where you’ll hear the epic stories of pioneers—the builders of villages, churches, factories, dreams… In short, everything that makes Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean such a unique and endearing place today.
Want to soak up the region’s soul and understand why locals have a bit of a wild (read: festive, resourceful, and inventive!) reputation? This circuit is the simplest (and most enjoyable) way to uncover the mystery!
You’ll visit must-sees like the Ermitage Saint-Antoine, the Val-Jalbert Historic Village, the Ilnu Museum in Mashteuiatsh, as well as lesser-known spots like the Louis-Hémon Museum and the Kapatakan Trail. You’ll discover heritage buildings, cultural exhibition centers, religious sites, and picturesque corners that even I—someone who’s been in the tourism industry for two decades—still love to visit again and again!

Cultural Sites and Personal Favorites to Discover
I won’t list them all—we have to leave a bit of mystery—but here are a few stops that are worth their weight in stories:
- Saint-Cyriac Chapel, which is perched proudly on the shores of Lake Kénogami like a lighthouse (and is the star of many heritage selfies).
- Moulin des Pionniers, where you can touch turn-of-the centure tools (and feel grateful you don’t have to chop your own wood).
- Arvida Heritage Museum, which tells the stories of local families—not just the famous figures, but everyday life of the people that built their town.
- Métabetchouane History and Archaeology Center, where the remains of the trading post sit like “Post-its” to mark the encounters of European explorers with the First Nations peoples of the region.

Why Visit the Heritage Harmony Circuit (No Matter the Season)?
I could give you my professional speech about authenticity and preserving collective memory…but honestly, it’s just that the stops along the way are really interesting and beautiful. Plus, it leads you through some of the lesser-known corners of the region!
This is a circuit that is:
- Flexible – Go at your own pace, any season, no need for a military schedule. Doing it by car is recommended, but if you’re up for an extra-extra-long hike on foot, nobody will stop you!
- Accessible – Whether you’re a history buff, simply curious, or your looking for interesting stops with adapted facilities, this Circuit will meet your needs. Everyone can enjoy the visit without hassles.
- Meaningful – Your visit helps preserve heritage—admit it, that’s more useful than a tenth fridge magnet!
- Inspiring – Perfect to remind yourself that we are all builders in our own way.
The Questions I’m Always Asked (and My “Tourism Lady” Answers)
Is it a long visit?
It depends on whether you take time to read and examine everything or travel in “snap a photo and move on” mode.
Personally, I recommend setting aside a few days—and treating yourself to a night or two in heritage accommodations along the Circuit, like those at the Auberge du Presbytère de Mont Lac-Vert (see my suggested 4-day itinerary). If your time is more limited, I suggest mini getaways of a good half or full day. Rain or shine (even on those dreary November days!), challenge yourself to complete the whole Circuit!

Do I need to book?
For most places, no—but it’s always smart to double-check beforehand.
Is it kid-friendly?
Yes! Some sites have interactive activities that little explorers love. (Special mention for the family activities at L’Odyssée des Bâtisseurs!)

Is it expensive?
Prices are reasonable, and some sites are even free or accept voluntary contributions. (The Roberval heritage walking tour is free!)
Will I get bored if I’m not passionate about history?
No! Promise. It’s lively, varied, and often surprising. Even I always come away with a “Did you know…?” fact or anecdote I can whip out in conversation during my next cocktail party.

A Few Tips for Planning Your Visit
- Take your time. This Circuit is meant to be savored in every sense of the word. (And when snack time comes around, you’ll always find a little restaurant or farm stand to satisfy your cravings!)
- Bring your camera. There are beautiful buildings and sites along the way. Share your photos on social media with #CircuitdesBatisseurs!
- Dress for the weather. Around here, conditions can change faster than your desire for a nap after lunch.
- Check the online map. It makes your visit even more enjoyable (and helps you plan those strategic foodie stops).
